​This question challenges us to think beyond programs, isolated initiatives, or compliance. It calls us to intentionally design schools where excellence is experienced every day, in every classroom, for every student.

​

The New York State Portrait of a Graduate reminds us that preparing students for the future requires much more than academic achievement alone. Students must become effective communicators, critical thinkers, collaborative problem-solvers, ethical decision-makers, adaptable learners, engaged citizens, and lifelong learners. These qualities are not developed during a student's senior year; they are cultivated through thousands of intentional learning experiences beginning the moment students enter our schools.

Our commitment this year is to intentionally design both the learning experiences and the systems that make those outcomes possible every day.

​

Across Brooklyn South, we will continue strengthening high-quality Tier 1 instruction through rigorous literacy, numeracy, inquiry, discussion, reasoning, and authentic performance tasks grounded in Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education (CR-SE). We believe students should see themselves reflected in their learning while also engaging with multiple perspectives, diverse cultures, historical experiences, and ideas that deepen their understanding of an increasingly complex world.

Our classrooms should be places where students learn to think critically, communicate respectfully, examine evidence, appreciate differing viewpoints, and engage in thoughtful dialogue. These experiences strengthen not only academic achievement but also empathy, civic responsibility, and the ability to collaborate across differences, essential skills for college, careers, and democratic participation.

​

Every lesson, every unit, and every student experience should contribute to developing the knowledge, skills, and dispositions described in the New York State Portrait of a Graduate. The Portrait is not simply an aspiration for graduation; it is a framework for designing the experiences students have every day.

​

Outstanding instruction cannot exist apart from outstanding systems. Throughout the year, we will continue strengthening district and school systems that support instructional excellence, Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), attendance, wellness, family partnerships, college and career readiness, and continuous improvement. Our focus is not simply implementing initiatives but building sustainable systems that continue to improve regardless of changes in leadership or personnel.

When schools are designed well, excellent teaching, collaborative leadership, and continuous improvement become part of the culture rather than dependent upon one individual. That is the kind of organization we aspire to build across Brooklyn South, one where every student consistently benefits from strong systems, shared leadership, and collective responsibility.

Our commitment to The Moral Compass of Kindness remains central to who we are. Compassion, Responsibility, Integrity, and Forgiveness are not simply values we teach; they are principles that shape how we lead, serve, build relationships, resolve conflict, and create school communities where every student and every adult experiences belonging, dignity, respect, and purpose.

Attendance, student wellness, and strong family partnerships will continue to be foundational priorities because students cannot benefit from extraordinary learning opportunities if they are not present, connected, and supported. Together with our families and community partners, we will continue creating the conditions that allow every student to flourish academically, socially, emotionally, and personally.
